Reorganizing

A bit of time has passed since my last update. Now that our move is behind us, it's time to get down to business. We were blessed with an absolutely beautiful fall weekend for moving which helped certainly for things to run smoothly. I spent the next few weeks unpacking many boxes and reorganizing our new place. Feels like home now. After an enjoyable Christmas season with family, it was time to start back into some serious work.

April and I have been busy reorganizing all our supplies for our busy bead supply shop
(Rouge River Beads) to help streamline packaging and shipping and looking at expanding our item offerings in several categories. If you haven't stopped by recently, be sure to check out our SALE - only one week left!

Now I have some time to concentrate on my shop. It is important to set aside time every day for the creative side of me. Seeing all these ideas spinning around in my brain finally being produced into a finished product is very rewarding. Although I seem to always get bogged down when it comes to the picture taking part - I am slowly getting through when the best light allows for a photography session and listing new items. There is still some old pictures that need to be reworked, but after retaking pictures probably five to six times, I am finally happy with the overall look.

I also sat and compiled a list of goals for 2011 to help keep me on track. Although there are days that seem far too short, a small bit of time every day helps to work your way through the list.

Moving Chaos

With moving day now only 3 days away, I am in a flurry. The bathrooms have been polished to perfection, the fridge is a glistening and the stove and oven sparkle. That was yesterday's big project. On the agenda today, is to pack up the entire kitchen and wash out all the cupboards. Now of course, I'll leave out a couple of mugs for morning coffee!

Tomorrow's project will be to pack up all of our beading supplies and all that important office stuff and any last minute things I didn't take of.

Friday, pack up the car with much as it will hold and anxiously await that phone call "your key is ready to be picked up" Race down with a car and truck load of boxes, pick up the big truck on the way back and start loading her up.

My daughter and I are very anxious to get the new office space all set up and I'm anxious for a new studio space! It seems like months since I have made anything and it is driving me craaaaaaaaazy! A week or so of organizing and I can get back into a nice smooth routine again - YAHOO!

I've put my Etsy shop in vacation mode until our new space is totally organized and have had some time to catch my breath.

Now the big thing is to get through three days with no internet - I'm sure by Monday I will be in withdrawal.

How Goes the Clutter Chaos?

It's been quite some time since my last update. How goes the clutter chaos you ask?

Well the clutter police have now gone through our entire house. We decided in July we were going to list our house, so that meant decluttering everywhere before we could get the real estate in. Everything in the way of collections was relocated to my daughter's basement. That meant my valued fabric collection, my collection of quilt and cooking books, personal pictures. We thinned out the house and made it spacious and clutter free - very tidy house for prospective buyers.

The office had to look absolutely tidy every day, so all that was in there was the bare minimum. When you ship out supplies on a daily basis http://www.etsy.com/shop/rougeriverbeads, it made things very confusing - after all, every day it had to look like the maid had just whipped through.

Thankfully, in our area, it does not take long to sell a house. In five days it was sold, but I continued on with the decluttering. I have gone through every drawer, every closet and every cupboard getting rid of all things that no longer serve a purpose and should be finished with this huge task this weekend. I have packed up pretty much everything that we can live without for the next couple of weeks, so now all that is left is that last minute stuff that can't be done until the last few days before moving day.

The whole process has been time consuming but so worth it in the end.

Moving day is quickly approaching! Then we are faced with that huge sea of boxes. I'm itching to get totally re-organized as the creative bug is getting the better of me. I'm looking forward to getting our life back to normal, being able to create everyday and loading up my shop with great new goodies!

And to top it all off, now I will be only 15 minutes away from that adorable little grandson that I love so much!

Clutter Chaos - Part 2

Last week began my massive project of decluttering my office/studio space. How is it progressing?

This week I have spent any free moment I could find (which are few on some days) shredding and shredding and shredding old documents and paperwork. Our large recycle bin is close to overflowing but will get emptied on Tuesday, our recycle day, just in time for me to start all over again.

It always amazes me how much paper stuff can accumulate in one house.

Next weeks job will be to finish off with shredding and then organizing all the remaining important stuff into proper files. I did buy myself a new 2 drawer filing cabinet some months ago that tucks neatly under my work table, but to be quite honest, once it arrived home and found it's spot, I kind of forgot it was there and never bothered to organize and fill it up.

Part of next week's project will be to make up nice new files for all our personal bills that I save, all housed in their pretty hanging folders and filed away alphabetically of course. I only like to keep 6 months worth of personal stuff like utility bills, etc., so I must get in the habit of purging and shredding stuff from these files regularly so that the clutter doesn't get the better of me again.

The second drawer will be for all business related stuff in their tidy files too, so that I can find things easily come tax time (but not till it's updated in my computer program). And of course for all that wonderful information that is found on the internet to help us run our business better (tagging,promoting,renewing,relisting,photographing,SEO and all that good stuff) - well you know, I'm sure you have some of that stuff too. I'm still a fan of printing this good info out so that I can read it with my morning coffee or whenever the mood strikes me.

The computer table has been relocated to our bedroom for the time being. This was done to give me more space to move around in my tiny office and shuffle things around as I plow on with the cleaning process. I have to admit, it does feel good to let stuff go. I had to seriously analyze some things - do I REALLY need that, can I LIVE without it? So looking forward to the finished outcome.

Clutter Chaos - Part 1

Like most artisans working from their home, I use a small spare bedroom in our home which serves multiple functions. It's used as a computer room/office, sewing room, storage for our beading supplies shop, shipping zone, fabric storage, creating space for jewellery making and storage for finished inventory.

Lately, I seem to have a problem with getting inspiration when I am in this cluttered space. This tiny bedroom measures 8'6" x 10'3" with some very ugly 1980's wallpaper (it was this way when we moved in). I would love to feed this room some fertilizer to make it grow, but as this is not an option, I must come up with some very on the cheap storage and organizational ways to make this space more efficient and a more appealing space to work in.

The first step is to go through every container and every piece of paper and discard or shred anything that no longer serves a purpose. Our street does an annual garage sale in June, so a lot of no longer needed items will be set aside for that event - Hey - I want to do my part in the recylcle movement!

One day every weekend will be dedicated to just this project - so follow along with my progress. When it's all done, I hope to have a cheery and uncluttered workspace that I will enjoy spending more time in. I'll share before and after photos with you.

I did have a creative moment and made some cute earrings, perfect for a summer wedding!

Broccoli Salad Recipe

Looking for something different to serve with your holiday get together? My mom's broccoli salad is one of my absolute fav's and it is even better the next day! Here's her fantastic recipe:

5 cups broccoli florets
1/2 cup diced red onion
1/2 cup grated Cheddar cheese
1/4 cup roasted and salted sunflower seeds or you can put raisins or dried cranberries
6 bacon slices, diced

Dressing :2 tblsp. granulated sugar 2 tblsp. white vinegar 6 tblsp. mayonnaise
Combine broccoli, red onion, cheese and sunflower seed in large bowl.- Cook bacon. Drain well. Cool. Add to broccoli mixture.
Dressing: Mix all 3 ingredients in small bowl. Add to broccoli mixture and toss together.

As you may have noticed its been a whole week since I've updated! I've been busy with the hubby on holidays, reorganizing my "studio" and getting ready for the 2nd Busy Moms Marketing Blitz! I'm going to take a break from my story about growing our business to share with you some wonderful and talented artisans and mommies!

We have also been busy in both of our shops getting ready for the upcoming holiday season. At Rouge River Beads we have plenty of new fire polished crystals to choose from and will be adding more new items over the next couple of weeks including acrylic flowers and leaves! Bijoux Designs For You has also seen some new additions this month as we try to expand our stocking stuffer goodies for you to get your holiday shopping started. My fav's are these adorable little ladybug stitch markers.

The Birth of our Supplies Shop

Surrounded by beads from floor to ceiling we came to realize that we had more...much more than we actually needed. Plus my mom and I enjoyed the hunt for beads almost as much as creating so we decided to "destash" some of our items and in October of 2008 opened our supplies shop, Rouge River Beads.

Again we were under some assumptions. First we thought that supplies "just sold themselves" but were quick to realize that the supplies category is just as massive as the jewelry category. If you don't have good pictures than you are at an extra disadvantage and some extra promotion is still needed, especially when you are first starting out. So for both of our shops the great picture retaking began! This was still pre-lightbox but I think we did see some improvement and after a TON of reading thought that we were making some progress.

Another wonderful milestone for our business came on October 14th when Bijoux Designs For You blog was born. I instantly fell in love with blogging and to this day it is still something I enjoy (although my little one doesn't always leave me as much time to write as I'd like).
I had also discovered the wonderful world of the treasury and forums...how could we have been a member of Etsy for so long and not even realized they were there?! With the upcoming Christmas season we weren't sure what to expect but were busy making product for both online, home parties and craft shows. Who knew what the holiday season would bring?

Going Worldwide....

So in May 2008 my mother found Etsy. I had never heard of it but we both liked that it was a community, not just our own individual website, and that it supported handmade. Both of us had been afraid to try the "other E" after hearing a couple of horror stories and also finding it hard to navigate.

At this point in time I was VERY pregnant and VERY tired so mom took the reigns and got our very first online shop setup on Etsy, Bijoux Designs For You.It was also at this time that we re-registered our business, formerly Lakeside Quilts and Treasures (not so much quilting anymore).

Looking back now we were so naive, we thought if we listed "they would come" and so mom got to listing and we waited.......then the baby was born and both of us were busy, me as a new mommy and my own mom as a new grandma giving me a hand and our new little shop just kind of hung around. Then in September something fabulous happend- OUR FIRST SALE (this lovely Green Shell and Pearl Necklace)! I can remember my mom calling me to tell me we had our first sale and we were both like kids on Christmas and our fire was relit! On a personal note, even with a new baby at home I got back in the swing of things very quickly, finding it therapeutic and giving me a sense of self amongst all the new chaos in my life. That fall my mother also left her job giving her more time to also concentrate on our growing business. And yet the sales still weren't pouring in as we had expected. What were we doing wrong? Ah-hah....maybe we should open another shop....

Our Next Step...the Home Party

While some days I groan about waitressing the upside is that I work with a large group of women, and subsequently, a large group interested in buying jewelry.

I started wearing my creations to work and got some orders from friends and coworkers this way. It wasn't until we had been making jewelry for almost a year that we felt we were ready to do our first home party. We wanted to be able to offer enough product for shoppers to be able to take their goodies home with them THAT evening rather than ordering from a catalogue. Home parties are now one of my favorite ways to exhibit our work, there is no competition and its great to for a group of ladies to get out for the evening. The hardest part of a home party is getting more bookings and I still don't have the trick for that one so if someone else knows maybe they can share. I have written about home parties several times before, you can read more here.

One interesting route that hadn't occured to me came out of a particular home party. One lady hosted a home party in her home, had a great turnout, we had tons of fun and then asked if we would come to her office for a lunch hour party! What a great idea and it also turned out to be a fruitful endeavor. As you can see we have started to look at our business as a whole, expanding and growing, and yet something was still missing...ah yes, going worldwide on the internet!

Changing Focus- Entering the handmade market with our jewelry

So we began making jewelry. In the beginning we mainly created pieces for ourselves and friends while we improved our technique and tried out different designs. Then it was time to introduce our creations to the public...how exciting!

The very first exhibition of our jewelry was at the Cannington Quilt and Craft Show (the same one we just did last weekend). We still had sewing products and some folk art creations so we displayed those as well. Our booth was definately a mish mash of items and it didn't really have a cohesiveness to it. We didn't have a bad weekend and it was an excellent opportunity to see what kinds of things customers were looking at, trying on and buying. I have done several previous posts on craft shows that you can read more about here and here.

The downside: jewelry is a heavily saturated market and our hearts just broke when people walked by our booth and said "oh more jewelry!" It did however lead us to thinking more about what makes our products unique and how can we draw visitors in to come and look at our things. At subsequent craft show we have begun to work on this, doing a draw for a pair of earrings or a bookmark brings people in to fill out ballots and keeps them in your booth longer. I got several little treasure boxes and painted them pink and put smaller goodies in them and people love to come and dig for a "treasure". All in all we look at every craft show as a learning experience and try to improve for the next one!

But it wasn't enough...at this point both my mother and I were still working and we wanted to be able to "quit our day jobs!" Isn't that the dream of many artisans and crafters out there? So the question became what else can we do to grow? Stay tuned to find out where our journey led us next!

I inherited the crafting fever from my mother. She has been creating something my entire life and involved in the handmade world just as long. Her original passion was for sewing and for some time owned a quilting fabric shop. Due to some life changes, including a move, my mother took some time off from the handmade world.

In the meantime I was busy growing up. I remember going to craft shows with my mom when I was younger and being so excited to get to bag up people's purchases. When I got a little older I helped at the store and learned how to sew. I didn't know it then but the creative seed had been planted.

Several years went by and then my mom decided that perhaps she would rejoin the handmade world. She had always done well at the annual Cannington Quilt and Craft Show (which we will be exhibiting at this coming weekend) and so decided to relaunch herself there. At this point Lakeside Quilts and Treasures was born and she began to rebuild her inventory and sign up for craft shows. I was busy in university at the time so my actual role was merely "cheerleader", although I have now learned that having someone to cheer you on is invaluable. After a holiday season in the craft show circuit I joined mom in her creating journey. At that stage she was still sewing and doing folk art and I helped her out where I could, base coating items, cutting out wine bags, helping at shows, etc. And then her birthday came around....

One thing about my mother is that she is always wanting to learn new things (an admirable quality) and my thirst for learning is also quite large. We decided for her birthday to take a jewelry making class. My own personal obsession with jewelry was CRAZY, not ever being able to own enough earrings and necklaces so the thought of making my own was very appealing. Needless to say after an afternoon with some wire and beads learning the basics we were both hooked!

I haven't been blogging as frequently as I usually do. It's been a combination of holidays, my little guys 1st birthday and now he's been feeling under the weather. All result in very little productivity for me.

However, it has also been a case of writer's block. What to share? Where to go with our blog? And so I decided to start at the beginning...how did Bijoux Designs For You and Rouge River Beads come to be? How have we changed and grown (hopefully evolved!) and what have we learned? Stay tuned for the "birth" and come along on our journey!

A Showcase of our Jewelry and Gifts

Yesterday was our open house in my home for friends and family. I had several visitors and many of them were first timers and even some friends brought other friends that I didn't know. I set up a small display in my living room using a dropleaf table, some tv trays, my entertainment unit and my patio table (on the other side of the room). It was open house style, with guests dropping by between 1-8.

Invites: I sent out an email to my mailing list, an invite on to my friends on facebook and put up a little poster at work. Just something simple with date, time, directions and a link to our Etsy and Artfire stores so they could browse ahead of time if they wanted to.
I offered a door prize and had guests fill out a ballot with their name, email and a box to check if they wanted to be added to our mailing list (everyone checked the box) AND I had one girl book a home party for October.

I loved doing the party in my own home. I could invite guests on a day/time that worked for me, I didn't have to find a sitter for the baby, when there was no one here I could just work like normal, I set up the night before so I didn't have to rush AND there was no overhead cost or competition! If you have been contemplating having an open house I say go for it! Even with a small inventory it's great practice to work on your display and get the hang of dealing with customers face to face (especially if you have only ever sold online). You can also team up with another artisan in your area to offer a wider range of products and have them invite their friends as well.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am still here...hubby was on holidays last week so we enjoyed some wonderful family time including a trip to the zoo with the baby.

You may have noticed that we now have a Facebook Fan Page. You can become a fan here. I'm still exploring the world of Fan Pages but it should be a fun ride!

Tomorrow I am hosting an open house in my home. I will do a more detailed blog post on Wednesday with some pics and share my experience with you. If you have never exhibited your work in person and are a little frightened of the craft show scene this might be the avenue for you.

Hard to believe that the nice weather is finally here and we are already looking towards Christmas. It is, however, a fantastic time to find some super awesome handmade deals. ORANGE-GINGER CHICKEN (OR PORK) STIR FRY

Today's blog post is brought to you by the mother part of our team, Glenda. Enjoy her fabulous recipe!

I am in love with the flavour of orange-ginger sauce. This can usually be found in your grocery store in the Asian section. This is what I do with this yummy sauce.
- In a frying pan with a small amount of oil, add the following:- one onion (cut into wedges)- 3 - 4 carrots (peeled and sliced on the diagonal)- 2 - 3 celery stalks (cut on the diagonal)
Cover and cook veggies on low until crisp tender, stirring occasionally and adding more oil if necessary.Feel free to add any other veggies.
This is a good opportunity to use up odds out of the fridge. Peppers and zucchini are especially yummy too. (If using zucchini, add during the last 5 mins. so it doesn't go mushy).
- Once veggies are cooked, remove to a bowl and set aside.- Add to the same pan, more oil if needed and add cubed boneless chicken or cut up pork tenderloininto medallions. Either one tastes great in this recipe. Cook meat until no longer pink. Drain.To serve 3 adults I use 3 - 4 chicken breasts or two small pork tenderloins. (This gives leftovers forsomeone's lunch the next day).
- Add veggies back to the same pan with the meat and combine everything with about 1/2 bottle of the sauce.I find that 1/2 bottle works well, but feel free to add more if you think you need it.- Cover and let simmer on low while you prepare rice. This gives a chance for all the flavours to develop.
- Serve with rice.
I find with the dog days of summer upon us, I like to skip the rice and serve the warm meat mixture ontop of a garden salad with my favourite bottled dressing for a lighter version. Prepare your salad withyour dressing first, and then add the meat.
- Serve with fresh Italian bread or a baguette for those who still enjoy their carbs.

Happy Canada Day! Unfortunately it is raining here but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a great family day! One of my favorite dishes for get togethers is Nacho Dip. I think everyone has their own version but here's mine:

I make mine by combining 1 brick of cream cheese (its ok if its still chunky...tastes better that way) with a container of sour cream and a half a package of chili seasoning or nacho seasoning(this is definately not a low cal dish) in a rectangular dish. Top with salsa, diced tomatos, onions and peppers. Bring along a bag of your favorite nacho chips.Dip and enjoy!

Tell me a bit about your mommy life:
I have two girls, a 4-year-old and a 14-month-old who make me laugh constantly. I work full-time in a corporate environment in a global function so I do get to travel a little, although not so much so lately since most companies are cutting back. My husband of 8 years and I have a good daily routine going which keeps everyone sane and calm. I usually work on my etsy business after the girls have gone to bed. I live on my iphone as it is the key tool that helps me stay productive and organized.

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations:
I have been an etsy buyer since 2008 but really only picked up on my etsy store about 2 months ago. So far, I have been focused on creating artwork and prints that feature silhouettes of children and animals. The items people have shown most interest in so far have been the “My Daddy Is . . . “ and “My Mommy Is . . . “prints, the alphabet and numbers print in different languages, and the solo prints of animals with their English and another language.

What is interesting is that offline, the silhouette papercut artwork are what people gravitate towards because visually, they are so striking and unique. However, they do not seem to do well on etsy so I am looking for feedback from anyone on how I can translate their appeal onto etsy.

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood?
Deliberate planning and prioritizing of tasks may seem like such a drag on time but it is so important to take the time to do so, so that you are not chasing the next idea or jumping into creativity mode without thinking through where to best spend your time.

I find that actually writing down your desired outcomes in very specific words and breaking down the steps to get to that outcome, really helps you allocate your time accordingly and in a focused manner. Ticking off each mini task really encourages you to work on the next step without getting distracted, and in most cases, will “force” you to only work on those tasks during non-family hours since you have already assigned them.

(This methodology is an adaptation of a very popular productivity program called the GTD (or Getting Things Done) system, look up the creator David Allen or GTD online for more information)

Tell me a bit about your mommy life:I am the proud mommy of 2 sweet boys. One just turned and the other is 9 months old. We live in Mesa, Arizona, aka “the valley of the sun”. I spend my days picking up matchbox cars and choo choo trains and cleaning up dirty socks and spilled applesauce. I sing the Thomas the Train song and the ABC song at least 10 times a day and I can’t get enough of it! During naps and after bedtime I work on my Etsy crafts. I really enjoy taking my boys on little adventures. We go to the zoo, the library, many different parks, the mall, or just on a walk down main street. I’m so glad I get to stay home with my boys. I wouldn’t trade it for anything! As for me, I am a crazy crafter, I will find one hobby, stick to it for about a month and then completely switch hobbies. This year I’ve done a little cake decorating, a little photography, some polymer clay jewelry, a bit of quilting and sewing, home decorating, painting, gardening, etc. You get the idea. I just want to know how to do everything!

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations: I design shirts for little ones and thier moms. I do dye remover stencils and appliques. I make my own designs and hand cut each stencil (seriously). I started making my stenciled shirts about 2 years ago. I started making shirts for my boys and then for my friends and family’s children. Then it hit me, “maybe other people would love these shirts as much as I do!” So, I started my Etsy shop so that other people could enjoy them too. I just added appliqués to my shop and I am having so much fun coming up with new designs. So FUN!

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood? I take advantage of every second of the day. If I find five extra minutes I’ll quickly take care of something that needs to be done. I also do as much as I can while my kids are asleep.

Fun Stuff:
Coffee, tea or hot chocolate? I can’t resist a hot cup of cocoa with mini marshmallows in the winter, in the summertime I opt for herb tea, strawberry is my fave!
I am addicted to…. Besides etsy? I’m addicted to brownies! I am a hopeless chocoholic. I also am addicted to “projects”. I always have to be busy doing something.
If you could have one super power…. I would read minds. Just think of the possibilities!
If I were to catch you grooving it would be to… Depending on the day of the week it would be Jack Johnson, Mae, or some other laid back “chillin’” music, or almost anything on the classic rock station (Led Zepplin, and Heart are my faves). When I’m with my kids we jam to silly songs about trains (check out “Choo Choo Soul”, it’s great).

So from there our scrapbook service business was started for those of you that would like to have a scrapbook but don’t have the time to create one for yourself. As our business ideas progressed we decided to expand into creating photo birth announcements. We feel that Etsy is a great way to reach out and find new exciting customers for our business, so that is when we launched our Etsy shop.

Tell me a bit about your mommy life:
I am a home schooling mom of a 15 year old girl (9th gr). On July 2008 I quit my 12 year job to focus on my teenager. It has been the best decision; I never thought it would be so easy to adapt to a full time mom position. Now my daughter is creating her own jewelry pieces and she helps me at craft shows (for a small fee of course). She is also very helpful around the house and I love her very much. I feel so blessed to have a supportive husband. I am supportive towards his surfing as he is supportive of my endeavors. I guess is an exchange.

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations:
Lately I haven’t had much time for my shop; I’ve been so busy creating and finishing my daughters school year paperwork that I am lucky if I can renew some items. Soon summer break starts and my daughter will be busy with her daily summer acting program, thus, leaving me free to work on the shop and chat on the forums. I can’t wait!
Each time I sit at my work bench, my mind tickles with new creations. I love working with a variety of materials and creating pieces that reflect the Hawaiian life style. The challenge of custom orders are exciting.

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood?
Lol, Go to sleep with the chickens and wake up with them. I go to bed at 8:30pm and wake up at 4:45am. In the morning I can get a lot done while my daughter is still a sleep. `

Tell me a bit about your mommy life: My mommy life is amazing! Peyton is 10 months old and doing something new and exciting every day. During the day I work full time for an architect and then rush home to see Peyton at night. She’s an amazing little girl who always keeps me happy and laughing. Motherhood is truly awesome!

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations: My shop kind of started on it’s own. I would go to sleep at night and find myself thinking of all the stuff I still had to do around the house, had to do at work the next day, etc. Next thing I know I would have wasted precious sleeping time thinking. So I needed a hobby that could help gear my brain down at night so I could fall asleep. Sewing does just that for me. Peyton goes down for the night and that’s when the crafting begins. It’s quickly become somewhat of an obsession for me and at times the housework slips because I just have to finish what I’m working on! ChickenTattoo is a conglomeration of mine & my sister’s creativity and it’s inventory is ever-changing.

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood? Is this even possible?! I have found that maximizing my time at work has helped at home. At times, I’ll even cut out patterns on my desk while on lunch break - talk about obsession!

Fun Stuff:
Coffee, tea or hot chocolate? Coffee first thing in the morning followed by sweet tea the rest of the day.
I am addicted to…. Family vacations! My husband, dog & I traveled often before Peyton was born - to the mountains and the beaches (a luxury of living within 4 hours of each). Now that Peyton’s been added to the mix nothing’s changed except the amount of luggage we have - a drastic change!
If you could have one super power…. To be able to pick the lottery numbers! I’d love to be a stay-at-home mom with Peyton and her future siblings!

Tell me a bit about your mommy life:
I have one son who is now 15. I have always been a stay at home mom and in the last 5 years I have been a stay at home homeschooling mom. After our first year I realized that my son didn’t need me hanging over his shoulder when he did his schoolwork that I had better find something to busy myself with while I stayed near to help him when he needed it. Voila, jewelry making came into my life! A homeschooling mom in my support group was seedbeading, she taught me what she knew, I was hooked and it has just taken off from there.

So I make jewelry, sketch new designs anytime I can, and plan projects around my son’s activity and homework schedule. You can often see me at the park when we meet with our support group making some jewelry item while I chat with the other moms. Now that I have a creative outlet, my house is not any cleaner than it was before but I am a happier mom!

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations:
If I had to describe my work with one word it would be weaving. Not just weaving wire as with the Viking Knit or weaving with seedbeads but weaving multiple techniques in with each other. I have just scratched the surface with this and am always looking for new ways to bring multiple elements together to create something that is one of a kind. Sometimes I think my shop looks like a mishmash because there are so many different techniques mixed up together but that’s really what I do – I try to mix it all up to create something new.
My first love is seed beading but here in the south it’s just not so popular. So I keep working on it as art – because I truly think it is art – adding new pieces here and there, but I went into wire wrapping for its sculptural aspects, its versatility and its popularity.
We are still building our shop, learning better methods for the photography, and marketing. We really enjoy the response and feedback we get on Etsy, from shoppers and other shop owners.

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood?
I am not very good at the juggling but I would say if I have learned anything, for me it works to break projects down into smaller parts so that I can make progress on them as I go through the day and the week. I also keep several notebooks and sketchpads around the house and with me when I am out so that I can jot down notes of projects and drawings so that I don’t have to try to remember everything in my head. I also set goals for myself, especially if I have a show coming up or a showcase on Etsy. I write down what projects I want to complete and put it on the refrigerator so I that I can plan and execute my next step. And because the whole point of my business is to express my creativity, I always try to set aside time to just experiment with a new idea or technique – that’s where the fun is!

Fun Stuff:
Coffee, tea or hot chocolate? Coffee, coffee, COFFEE!! Only if it is fresh, drip brewed espresso or French roast. Gosh we love good coffee at our house!
I am addicted to….Really good French roast coffee, Rice crackers, silver, beads, movies, dogs, and politics, not necessarily in that order.
If you could have one super power…. Oh, man, that’s easy! It would be the ability to stay up 24/7, never needing sleep. I would get so much done that way and truly be a super mom!

Tell me a bit about your mommy life: Hi all! My name is Amy. I am a mommy to 4 little girls ages 13, 7, 3, 2 yrs old. My mommy life gets very hectic because my 13 and 7 year olds are very active in school and sports and then my 3 and 2 yr old just keep me busy like all 2 and 3 yr olds do! J We always seem to have something going on between cheerleading, softball, soccer, and piano lessons. I love the summer times because other than a month or so of softball, we basically get to relax and just spend some quality time together as a family, it's nice! This year for the first time in forever I will only have one child home with me all day as my 3 yr old will be going to preschool! I don't know what our 2 yr old is going to do with herself! She is going to terribly miss her sister. Overall, I have completely enjoyed Motherhood and all it's ups and downs and I feel like it is my biggest accomplishment and I am so proud of our girls.

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations: My shop is called Ozark Scents candles and I opened shop in November 2008. I really started actively selling in January 2009 though. I love making things, always have. I have always been a "crafty" type of person and I love trying new things. I started making candles with my Grandmother and I absolutely fell in love with creating them! I have made all types of candles from paraffin to soy to beeswax and I love them all. My favorite to make and in my opinion the best to burn are soy blend but each wax has it's own great qualities and benefits. I guess that is why I like the blend because it combines all those great qualities into one candle! Soap is where I really get creative, I take a soap base and add what I want to it. There is so much you can do with soap and I love handmade soap, once you use it you will not go back to store bought soap again!

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood? If there are any tips can someone please let me know! My biggest help by far is my supportive husband. He helps with the kids, does housework and cooks dinner if I have to work. For the most part I try to do all my work for my shop while my kids are sleeping or busy playing together or something. Also, lots of coffee and little sleep!

Tell me a bit about your mommy life: I am the proud mommy of a very busy and active 10 month old boy named Colson. I wish time would stand still for a little while because I am SOOOOO enjoying watching him learn and grow. My own mother (the other part of Bijoux Designs For You) is mommy to 3 grown children, myself being the oldest. I have a sister, who is married, and a brother who still lives at home and enjoys being "babied".

Tell me a bit about your shop: I inherited the crafting fever from my mother who has been creating something my entire life. Almost four years ago we went to a jewelry making class and we were both instantly addicted! Our creations then focused on beading and we began sewing and painting less and less. We began our online adventure a little over a year ago and have continued to learn and grow. In addition to our jewelry and gift shop we also have a supplies shop to share our lovely beads and findings!

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood? One of the bonuses to working as a team is that if you are having an especially busy "mommy day" then the other person can help you out. It's also nice to have the support so my suggestion is to find someone (a spouse, partner, parent, child or friend) who believes in what you do and can give you motivation when you are running low!

Tell me a bit about your mommy life: I am the happy mommy of an 8 year old and a 19 month old, both boys! We are very busy! We play in the dirt, toss rocks in the creek and like to look for worms in the garden! Since it is summer, my husband and I like to take the boys to our cabin and spend weekends in the mountains. I love to sit on the dock in the morning with my cup of coffee and watch the boys fish in the lake.

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations: I love to make things that moms (or any gal for that matter!) can use everyday, but make them beautiful! I feel like the things we use every day should be beautiful and bring a smile to our faces.
I started out sewing for myself, then sewing for family and friends, then friends started asking me to make things for their friends. It kind of grew from there.

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood? I have lists everywhere! If it isn’t written down I just can’t remember it. Grocery list, to do list, project list, sewing supplies list… And a calendar to remind me of appointments, baseball games, playgroup, etc.

Tell me a bit about your mommy life: My son Daniel is 19 months old right now, and it seems like he learns a new word every five minutes. We spend our days reading books, going to the nearby playground, and taking walks in the big graveyard a few blocks away. That last one sounds pretty weird, but it's a beautiful cemetery with flowering trees, a river, ducks, geese, and winding paths that are smooth enough for the stroller. It's a wonderful place to go when we both need a little quiet time outside. When he takes his afternoon nap, I get to work on my craft projects or do some writing, maybe watch part of a movie or read a bit.

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations: I started my shop at the suggestion of a friend who has an Etsy shop herself. I decided to name it Huggermugger because it's a fun old word that no one really uses anymore -- among other things, it means "jumble," and I knew my shop would end up a big jumble of different kinds of items because I love to do so many crafty things. I was right -- at the moment, I sell crocheted baby hats, one-of-a-kind collaged journals and notebooks, finger puppets, purses, sachets... and I'm working on some new items that are different from any of those. Most of the things I sell come about because I need something myself and decide to make it instead of buying it, and then I decide I like making that item and make some to sell too. I started making my baby sun hats because I needed one for my son last summer. I journal and write a lot

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood? I find my life goes the smoothest if I pick one particular project or chore to complete each day. Be it sweeping the floors or photographing a new item for my shop or getting a blog post written, as long as I've finished that project by the end of the day, I can feel like I haven't wasted my day. It's what keeps me from going completely looney.

Tell me a bit about your mommy life: I have 2 children ages 9 and 6. I have been a Stay-at-Home-Mom since my oldest was born and I love every minute of it. I said that I would think about a part-time job when my youngest entered 1st grade, which was this year. I wanted a job that would work around my children's schedules. I started Newhopebeading this January because it allows me the flexiblity to be there for my children when they need me.

I am a stay at home mom to 3 amazing munchkins! I have a 3½ year old daughter, a 2 year old daughter, and newly 1 year old son. Life right now consists of food, diapers, laundry, and funny comments to make me laugh!

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations:
As a young girl, my mom and grandma taught me to crochet and knit. Since that time, I have usually had at least one creation ongoing. For years, family and friends have urged me to find a way to offer my art for sale and Etsy was a perfect match. I offer blankets, hats, mittens, booties, stuffed animals, and anything else that I come up with for small children. All of my items are made to withstand the usual stress of being blessed with active children as well as to be very useful.

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood?
Make the most of every moment, even if they come in 5 or 10 minute blocks! Those little moments add up. J

Tell me a bit about your mommy life: I'm mommy to two adorable kids. A little girl who just turned 4 and a little boy who is 15 months! I started my business when I quit my full time job to stay home with my first. We do lots of mommy and me classes and now preschool for my oldest preschool, beach, pool, park, and now season passes at Disneyland. I love being a mom and having fun with my kids everyday!

Tell me a bit about your shop: I love creating baby blankets and bedding and now little accessories. I love seeing blankets that are tattered and worn because that means they were deeply loved. My goal has always been to create the perfect child's "blankie" that they would pick and love. When I had my first baby I realized that all of the supposed "high-end" blankets out there were really poorly made and often fell apart. Being a quilter, I decided to make my own. Friends and family started ordering and it took off from there! All of my blankets use only the best quality fabric (that will withstand children!), all have special quilters batting inside (that make them more durable), and they are all quilted (which also increases their durability).

Time Saving Tip: I live by my planner! I write down everything so I don't have to worry about remembering everything. And I don't try to cram too much into one day. I plan certain days for certain tasks and that seems to help get everything done without getting overwhelmed.

Fun Stuff:

I'm addicted to...taking pictures of my kids. I've taken more since I've become a mom than I ever did in my life! Is that normal? :-)

Tell me a bit about your mommy life:
Busy…busy…busy! My little one, Logan Maximus Miller, was born October 2, 2008. I work part time for a non-profit research firm, Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research & Innovation Center as director of the life sciences program there. So, I am blessed to get to spend a lot of time with the little guy, watching him grow and interact with the world around him. There is also a cat and an African Grey Parrot in our home who I suppose claim me as “mom”, too!

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations:
I have a habit of “dabbling”…I’ll see something I like and think- I could do that! So, off I go giving it a try. I am pretty new to Etsy but my prior dabblings have included handmade jewelry and rosaries, tole painting, iris paper folding, quilling, precious metal clay, quilting, mosaics and even lampwork glass making, which I absolutely adore but find too challenging right now with the little guy and a parrot who periodically flies through the house. I picked up most of these hobbies during my graduate work but decided that the results of my “dabblings” were doing little good sitting upon my shelf or desk. So, as I was doing my graduate research in a cancer center, I decided to donate all proceeds from my handmade items to the local breast care center to help cover health care costs for those who could not otherwise afford them. So far, about $7,000 has been donated. My handmade rosaries are available for purchase at several local merchants (Vittoria & Banks: Art For Your Soul, and Rider Pharmacy). I am hoping that Etsy will allow me to enter a much larger market place, allowing even more to be donated to the breast care center. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood? Know your limits and don’t be afraid to gently say “no” to those who inadvertently infringe on what little precious time you have. Remember your priorities and stick to what is truly important to you!

Fun Stuff:

Coffee, tea or hot chocolate? Tea. In fact, my favorite commercial tea concoction (vanilla chai latte) was discontinued so…here I go again…I decided to make my own. With a little bit of trial and error, and bias of course, I think mine is even better than the original! Although, I must admit, there is little like sipping a good mug of homemade cocoa blanketed with marshmallows in front of the fire place on a cold winter night.

I am addicted to smooching my little guy and playing with his feet- but isn’t every mom?

If I were to catch you grooving it would be to…likely Led Zeppelin, although on any given day you would find Logan and I bouncing around the house to any silly song that makes him smile.

Tell me a bit about your mommy life:
I’m a proud mum of a little 17 and a half-month-old boy, Tahi. I stopped working just before he was born and haven’t got any plans to go back to work any time soon! In an ideal world, I’d be mothering him full time until he’s at least 5 then possibly start working part time. I previously worked in the film industry as a camera assistant, with unpredictable schedules and long working hours, both of which are unfortunately uncompatible to our idea of family lifestyle. I’m planning on breastfeeding Tahi until he’s 2, and hopefully let him self ween. We have also been practicing Natural Infant Hygiene since he was 5 month, and he hasn’t been wearing nappies since he was 10 month old (except for nightime and naptime), and teaching him sign language (great for communication and avoiding frustrations!). I’m also thinking about home schooling or unschooling him, but need to find out more about it.
We do a lot of activitites together: playcentre, stories at the library, swimming lessons, playing with other little friends (while mums have a coffee!), sing songs and quiet play at home, fewding horses and ducks, …

Tell me a bit about your shop and your creations:
I started sewing some of his clothes a few months ago, because the cool nice stuff is too expensive for us (that’s the downside of not working!) and the choice is very limited as far as kid’s clothes go anyway. There was also a lack of nice, practical clothing for ECing parents (Elimination Communication, another term for Natural Infant Hygiene) so I came up with my own designs. Then I made more for some friends, sold some stuff at a market and then found Etsy and opened a shop! Unfortunately, there are no craft markets where we live so I am limited to Etsy, but I hope to be able to do some eventually (I love craft markets!).
I like clothes that are not too girly girly or boyish, not just pink and blue. I like the idea that kids can wear nice, comfortable and practical clothes, just like ours! I am also a big advocate for the environment and try to limit the amount of waste we produce, so I endeavor to re-use and upcycle as much as possible. And show it’s possible to turn something old into something cool!

Any time saving tips for juggling a business and motherhood?
Lists, lists, lists.
I’m a list-o-maniac, a compulsive lister, a serial lister.
I used to live in an appartment in Paris that was on the 4th floor, no elevator… And I always ended up going up and down 5 times because I’d realise once at the bottom that I’d forgotten my scooter keys, cheques that needed to be banked, my jacket, my purse,… Same goes for shopping, I always ended up shopping every couple of days because there was always something I’d forgotten,…
So now I write lists for everything. When I was working, I’d write a list of everything I needed to do on my days off (which could be rare, therefore time was very precious), and now I still do it so that when Tahi’s asleep or with his dad, I can get all I want done. I’ll sit down for 5 minutes in the morning before I do anything else, and write a list of what I need/ want to do, and then place them in order of priority. I sometimes end up with 3 or 4 different lists! (daily to do list, shopping list, long term to do list, and usually an old list still floating around). I know, I sound like a freak, but I strongly believe it ends saving me time and energy. Except when I forget my lists at home.

Have you ever participated in a marketing blitz with fellow team members or another group of artisans? So far I have participated in two and that led me to organize one for our Busy Moms Team. How it works is that everyone who wants to participate is given a feature day/days and everyone involved pool their resources together to promote that shop on their given day.

Our Busy Moms Blitz begins Monday and over the next couple of weeks I will have the pleasure of featuring some super talented, super busy moms and their shops. Stay tuned for some great reading!

So This Morning I Built A Lightbox

I have been trying to focus on improving our pictures lately. If any of you also have your own shops you will know that photographing your work is something that can often be difficult. There are tons of great tutorials out there for making your own lightboxes. I didn't want to spend a lot of time so I made mine out of a shoe box, tissue paper and a lamp! Since I am happy with the pictures I will put some more time into making a sturdier (and larger) one. Here's an example of what my pictures were like before:

I still need to work on the lighting and editing a bit but for a first go at it I am pretty pleased with the results. What do you think?

Here Comes A Home Party!

I just love doing home parties. They are a great opportunity to showcase your wares while chatting with some great people in a relaxed environment. Best of all there is little to no cost! I thought I would share with you today a little of what one of our home parties look like:

We try to get there at least an hour before the guests are scheduled to arrive. The thing with home parties is that your setup is always different and of course there are always those that arrive early so you want to be ready.

I always offer something small for a door prize and have little ballots for people to fill out. The ballots also have a place for their email address and a box to check if they want to join our mailing list (most people do). Once the majority of guests have arrived I often play an icebreaker type game such as celebrity trivia. You can find all kinds of quiz/trivia games just by searching the internet. It gets people fired up and in the spirit!

Depending on the crowd we usually give a little "intro" speech-who we are, how long we've been doing it, I talk about hosting a home party (and the incentives) and any specials we are offering that night. Then I have the hostess draw for the door prize and let people start shopping!

I make sure to have lots of postcards/business cards on hand about our website and little flyers about hosting a home party that I put in with each guests purchases. And that's about it!

If you are in the handmade business and have never tried having a home party in your own or a friend's home I highly recommend it.

We have been extra busy at Bijoux Designs over the past couple of weeks. If you have visited our Etsy or Artfire shops you may have seen our beaded bookmarks. We have been working at branching out to offer our bookmarks for wholesale, as favors for weddings, proms, birthday parties or other special occasions and as fundraising options for schools.

We were contacted by an area school teacher in search of prom favours for her students. The prom theme was casino so we worked with her to come up with a bookmark and keychain design. Each bookmark and keychain was then attached to a card with Casino Royale 2009! We had a blast putting together these special keepsakes for the students and look forward to being able to do more in the future.

What's the best summer job you ever had? I worked at Canada's Wonderland (a theme park here in Ontario) one summer as a front of house theatre manager. It was SO much fun and I looked forward to going every day. As a bonus employees also got free admission on their days off so we could ride the rides and have tons of fun! A fabulous experience

Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.I don't think I ever really had a bad date per se, just so,me really suckie boyfriends. Sometimes though you have to throw alot of fish back into the sea before you find the perfect catch!

Do you think the age for a driver's license should be raised (currently 16 here in the U.S.)? I'm not sure on that one as I know that growing up in a rural area it was important to have a license to get to an after school job so I could save for college. I was the first year for graduated licensing here in Ontario and in retrospect I think its a good system. You have your learner's permit for a year (you can take the driving test after 8 months if you took driver's ed) and the next phase has some limited driving restrictions before reaching the 3rd and final "full license" stage.

Describe to me your favorite lounging clothes. My favorite loungers are actually a pair of hospital style pants (gosh they are comfy) and a tshirt/sweatshirt depending on the weather. I also hate to wear socks so I love my slippers!
If you promised to never lie again in your lifetime, in what area would it be hardest to uphold the promise? I try not to lie anyways so I don't know that it would be that hard but of course everyone does say a little white lie occassionally. It would probably be at work that it would be toughest when sometimes a little white lie "yes everything's fine" really means "I'm tired, I don't think I have a big enough section (I'm a waitress), and so-and-so is not pulling their weight and I'm going to LOOSE IT!"

Do you recycle? Why or why not? Yes we recycle. I would love to say that its all about saving the environment, which is partially true. We live in a rural area and there is a limit on the amount of trash you can put out per week so recycling helps us keep under the limit.

Would you rather be a pirate or a prince/princess? I already thought I was a princess! Just kidding although my hubby would probably say that I'm not!

Are you into astrology? If yes, how does it affect your life? I'm not into astrology so much that it is a determining factor in my life. I read the horoscopes just for fun but I do have a lot of traits associated with my sign. I'm a Cancer by the way. What's your sign?
