Craft Fairs- If you have never done a craft show/fair before it is something for you to consider. Over the next few weeks I will be blogging about selecting craft fairs, booth setup, a craft fair "survival" kit, and I will let you know how our own first show of 2009 went and what I learned from it!
Display- So you have a show booked...now what? Display can be difficult and ours has changed numerous times over the years. I suggest trying out a "mock display" before your actual show so you can play around with your setup. Here are a couple of tips:
*Use tablecloths/covers that go right to the floor so that you can stash you buckets, extra products, bags, lunch, etc. under the table
*Use levels. By adding levels you can display more product as well as making it visible to potential customers from outside of your booth
*This one is debateable but I think that everything should have a price/sign. If you are busy with another customer than someone doesn't have to wait for you to finish to ask the price, and in the meantime saunter off to another booth. Also, if someone is shy they may not want to ask.
*Have a notebook or do a draw to collect email addresses for a mailing list.
*Don't eat in front of customers. This is why its often good to have a helper who can watch things while you use the bathroom and grab some lunch! If you don't have a child/spouse to drag along how about a friend and offer to pay them in product.
*No matter how slow a show is DON'T complain in front of customers!
*Make eye contact, smile and say hello!
We have a show this upcoming weekend in Sunderland, Ontario and I will take some pictures to share with you of our display. We also have made some changes since our fall shows and I think it will be better than ever!
Business bit- Do you make jewelry and are looking for an inexpensive way to display earrings? One idea is to take some old shutters, you can paint them if you want and then use the slats to hang earring cards from. It's also a great way to add height to your booth display!

Thanks for the tips! I've never done a craft fair-I'll admit it's a bit scary because it involves shelling out a chunk of money for a table, and I have no idea how it would go over. But there's one in columbus that I would have plenty of time to prepare for, so I might just grit my teeth and go for it!
